Use the tool above to get an estimate of how much you can expect to pay for therapy using Out-of-Network (OON) benefits.

I am primarily a private-pay, OON provider. While I don't accept insurance directly for most plans, your insurance plan may have OON benefits, which means that they will reimburse you for a portion of the session cost. This information provided is an initial estimate, not a guarantee of benefits. Call your insurance provider to verify this estimate and that they cover teletherapy sessions (most do). Most private health insurance plans provide some level of OON reimbursement. If you see the terms “POS”, “PPO” or “out-of-network” on your insurance card then you are likely eligible. If you see “HMO”, “Medicare” or “Medicaid” then you probably do not have OON benefits.

Many insurance providers will allow you to quickly and easily file OON reimbursement claims directly through their online portal. However, some insurers make this process more complicated. For this reason, I've partnered with Thrizer to make using your OON benefits easier.

Using Thrizer

Here's how it works with Thrizer (if you choose not to file claims yourself directly but still want to use OON benefits):

  1. Check Your Benefits: We'll first confirm your OON coverage & estimate your co-pay.

  2. Set Up Your Account: During or after our initial brief 15-minute consultation, you'll receive an email to create a Thrizer account, linking your insurance and payment information.

  3. Easy Payments: I'll charge you through Thrizer for appointments, and you can choose to either:

    • Thrizer Pay: Pay only your co-pay upfront (plus a 5% Thrizer fee)

    • Reimbursement: Pay the full session fee & get reimbursed later (1% Thrizer fee upon reimbursement, no upfront cost)

Important Notes:

  • Using Thrizer is free if you're working towards your deductible.

  • Please note that using this service is not a guarantee of payment. If you choose to pursue OON reimbursement a mental health diagnosis is also required.

OON Billing: Simplified Example

Here's a simplified example of how OON benefits typically works:

  • My “Standard (Session) Fee”: $250

  • “Allowed Fee” by Insurance: $180

  • Insurance Covers: 80% of Allowed Fee

In this scenario, you’d pay $106 per session:

  • $36 as copay (20% of the “Allowed Fee”) +

  • $70 as the difference between the “Standard Fee” & “Allowed Fee”

How OON benefits work.

You will be responsible for paying for each session in full at the time of appointment. I am an "outside" or “non-participating” provider. On the 3rd of each month, I provide a receipt called a “Superbill” that you can submit to your insurer for reimbursement (provided you have eligible OON benefits and you are submitting claims on your own rather than through Thrizer as discussed above). It typically takes insurance three to six weeks to process your claims. Many clients find it convenient to submit these claims every 1 to 2 months. To learn more about how OON billing works, please visit the Payments section of the FAQ page.

As a solo practitioner, I cannot directly accept insurance plans for therapy. The primary reason is that the low reimbursement rates offered by many insurance companies do not adequately reflect the true cost of delivering quality care. Additionally, the extensive administrative tasks required for insurance billing consume valuable time that could be better spent focusing on patient care. Furthermore, the risk of insurance companies demanding repayment for sessions, sometimes years after they have occurred, introduces financial uncertainty.

Given these challenges, I prioritize direct patient care over navigating the complexities of insurance. This allows me to focus on providing the highest standard of therapy. Private pay offers immediate access to initial appointments, allowing you to begin treatment sooner.
